Instagram has taken action against AI-generated profiles on its platform. These profiles will now be required to clearly indicate that they are entirely AI-generated. As AI has become highly advanced, it has become very difficult to determine whether something we see online is real or not. Instagram was one of the most debated platforms in this regard. In fact, there are currently a large number of accounts that try to appear like real people while sharing content generated entirely by AI. The platform has now introduced a new measure to address this very issue. Instagram announced that it has begun taking concrete steps against AI-based fake influencer accounts, whose numbers are rapidly increasing on the platform and are becoming harder to detect with each passing day.
Platform officials, noting that users are uncomfortable learning that a profile they thought was a real person was actually created by AI, are making changes to the system to ensure transparency. In an official blog post, it was emphasized that users want to clearly know whether a profile features a person generated by AI.

As part of this transparency initiative, Instagram has decided to rename the “AI creator” label it previously used. Seeking to make it much clearer that these profiles do not represent a real person, the platform is updating the label to “AI-generated profile.”
Instagram is not only changing the label’s name but is also cracking down on accounts that fail to declare that their profile was generated by artificial intelligence. Accounts that do not comply with the established rules and fail to label themselves as AI-generated profiles will face access restrictions. Under these sanctions, posts shared by such accounts will not be recommended to non-followers in the Reels and Explore tabs. It also announced that an appeal mechanism will be available for profile owners who believe they were mistakenly flagged as AI-generated or subjected to unfair restrictions.
These new penalties introduced by Instagram focus solely on the concept of “AI-generated people/profiles.” According to the company’s statement, real users who rely solely on AI tools to create their daily content are not required to add this label.
